A small shop on the side of a very busy road, you pull up and jump out for a quick and refreshing drink. An authentic sweet lassi, normally treated as a breakfast or energising drink to fill you up in the hot humid summer.
You watch the men make your lassi right therein front of you, made from scratch from thick and fresh curds, then drink it roadside from one use clay cups that are recyclable!
And don’t forget to visit a local desert shop. Indian sweets are my love language-my favourites:pistachio and cardamom barfi, hot gulab jaman and payasam. Go easy, they’ve very sweet!
MEET
Flower market
There is a great flower market in the middle of the city. Try and get there in the early hours of the morning to see it so full of life. Marigold everywhere!
Jantar Mantar-Jaipur
(जिंतरमिंतर-जयपरु)
An 18th century observatory! We went in the day time, but best to go on a clear night, mind blowing to see how they would read the sky.
We stayed here for four nights, and it was a beautiful and calm environment to come home to every day after the busy streets of the city. The staff are the kindest people you’ll ever meet, and the hotel only had 5 rooms so you all feel like family by the end.
This hotel is a restored 1800’s mansion-it will take your breath away! If you’re looking to treat yourself for a night or two, I couldn’t recommend this place more.
Home stays are also very common in India. We didn’t get time this trip but I would love to do this next time I’m here. Normally, a family offers up a room in their home and you’re part of the family for your stay. You get the chance to learn about the culture, eat traditional home cooked meals and learn a locals way of life.
DANCE
Get yourself invited to an Indian wedding!! You’ll dance like it’s your last night on earth. They sure know how to throw a party.
SEE
Forts and Palaces
You must go and see them all, they’ll take your breath away! My favourite was the Amber Palace- just 20 minutes outside of the city, the views and architecture are magnificent.
A non-profit initiative that sits at the intersection of craft, design, sustainability and community empowerment. They are passionate about keeping the traditional Indian craft alive and finding solutions to integrate sustainable practices into artisan communities in India. They created Nila House for the public to come and see their practices in person.
STREAM
All your senses are so highly stimulated while in a busy city like Jaipur. I found myself winding down with a calming sound bath or meditation.
