Rituals of Motherhood

In honour of Mother's Day, we sat down with creative director and founder of the brand, Lucy Folk. Interviewed by her partner Joffery, we learn more about how she balances motherhood with business and how imperative her rituals are to achieve harmony as a mother.

I have a list of questions for you. My first question, it's a soft one, did you travel much before having kids? Or while you were pregnant?

Yes, of course. I feel like life is a trip, right? We travel constantly, I would say we get itchy feet.

What came into your mind before you decided to be pregnant? Did you try to do as much travel as possible? Did you try to do as much as possible or did you just take it easy day after day?

I mean, I think I live my life as if each day is my last day. I want to do as much as possible, no matter what, so there was a lot of travel. We had a honeymoon before we had Malon, like the last hurrah as a couple before your life's changing forever.

What are your rituals as a mum?

As a mum, my ritual is to wake up, kiss my kids, give them big hugs, open the curtains, let the light in, and start the day looking at the sun. My kids love the beach, so when we're at home, they're at the beach every day, we all feel completely rejuvenated when we go to the beach, Swimming in the ocean, mineralizing in the sea, being under the sun.

So the beach is your kids first school, basically?

I mean, I think the kids' first school is us.  We encourage them to learn through our eyes and that's powerful because I think giving them space and an environment that's very safe. It makes them feel independent and confident because nature is their teacher.

How do you find being a creative director of your own business with 3 kids?

We've learned how to multitask. I mean, I've learned how to multitask. I think you prioritize everything but family first, right? So we've created a life where we parent, but we live and we work. I sometimes even work on the beach. It's often quite unstructured and each day is a different day and a different schedule, but It works and you just have to focus on yourself, making sure you balance your health to ensure that you can be the best mum and the best boss and creator of a business.

What would you say to a future mum?

Don't overthink it, just feel it, all through time, women have done this. Your body is an incredible thing, what you learn as you go is the most important. Lead with your intuition rather than information from a book.

Is it a hard job being a mum?

Yeah, it's challenging, it's definitely the most challenging job, but it's the most rewarding. Creating life is extraordinary, but the most beautiful thing is doing it with someone that you really love and respect and feeling like we're doing things together. We’re a team and we share this experience.

What do your kids eat?

Lala is pretty strong on the milk train these days and she's having purees. We only really eat organic or spray free produce. Line caught fish or, you know, well sourced pasture raised meat, where possible. For us it's about quality ingredients. It’s the same with the business, we don't produce garments or jewellery with materials that aren’t the best quality to use.

What piece of jewelry will you give to your daughter and your son when they’re older?

I'd love to create something for Malon, because he is very particular about what he likes. Currently he's sporting the bolo tie, which feels relevant for him.

For Lala, I've already just started an archive for her of clothes and jewelry, she's going to get some pretty significant pieces. I would say something like the vis a vis, which feels colorful and fun will be nice for her when she’s a teenager. Also, The Tulip collection, which is her name, Lala means tulip in Persian, so it would be nice to do some pieces that reference flowers too.
