Peter Cole is one of Australia's most renowned contemporary sculptors, known for the continuous line of enquiry he has pursued across his entire practice. One that draws equally from art history, architecture, design, structure and the physical act of making itself. Oigåll Projects is a proudly independent gallery and experimental design space based in Fitzroy, Naarm/ Melbourne. Founded in 2021, the gallery operates as both a commercial showroom and a conceptual playground, a site for serious ideas dressed up in fun outfits. 13 - 30 August (opening night 13 August 5:30pm - 8:00pm) at Oigåll Projects.

WATCH | MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

From August 6 to 23, the Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) returns with more than 250 films from around the world screening in and around Naarm/ Melbourne. James Turrell's most ambitious Skyspace to date just opened permanently at ARoS in Aarhus, Denmark. As Seen Below is a domed underground chamber with an aperture open to the sky. His 100th Skyspace, and worth the trip if you find yourself in Scandinavia.

Take a moment and sit in the Astral Garden with harpist and composer Nailah Hunter, summoning healing frequencies you can float off to. Sitting somewhere between modern classical and new age, Nailah Hunter's Astral Garden show is slow, meditative listening — the kind that's best with headphones and somewhere quiet. Available to stream now on the NTS archive.

NATURE | EORA/ SYDNEY WHALE WATCHING

August is one of the best months to spot humpback whales along the Eora/ Sydney coastline, as thousands pass through on their northern migration. Cape Solander in Kamay Botany Bay National Park is the top free vantage point. North Head in Manly, the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk and the Federation Cliff Walk from Dover Heights to Watsons Bay are all worth trying too.

EXPLORE | ANA MENDIETA

A major retrospective of Cuban-born American artist Ana Mendieta opens at Tate Modern in London, and it's the first in-depth UK showing of her work in over a decade. Best known for her Silueta Series, ephemeral works using fire, water and flowers to trace the presence and absence of the human body. The exhibition brings together iconic works alongside newly remastered films, early paintings and late sculpture, much of it never before seen in the UK. On until January 2027.
