Lessons in Plating

Join our Master Jeweller as they dive into the artistry behind our plated jewellery, exploring the thoughtful materials that shape each piece. We uncover how our designs balance beauty, durability, and the unique stories they tell.

What are our plated jewellery pieces crafted from? and why did we select those materials?

All of our plated pieces are fabricated in Solid Sterling Silver before being plated with Yellow Gold. We put a lot of effort into the story development and crafting of these pieces. So it is important that the materials are precious and reflect this love and care.

How does the use of Sterling Silver as a base enhance the beauty and longevity of our pieces?

We assume people will live in, love and value these pieces, so it is important that the material is safe to wear on your skin and the core material can be cleaned and maintained fairly easily. For plated pieces silver fits the bill perfectly.

Does working with sterling silver allow for more flexibility with shapes and designs?

We use silver in the areas of the collection where we are telling stories and getting wilder with design. Due to the lower price point of silver, we can work in lager scales and try new directions. People are more confident to curate wilder combinations in the silver price point, which Luce and I love. We will always include plated pieces in our collections because we have to much fun in this space!

What are the advantages of the plating we use?

We only do hard plating. This is thick and hard wearing. It's layer on the surface is measurable in microns with x-ray machines to assure consistency in quality and thickness.
Our earrings, necklaces and cuffs are 3 microns thick and for rings we use 5 microns, as rings tend to live a more active life. There is no value in plating thicker than 5 microns as the price is heading into solid 9ct gold territory.

Are there lifestyle factors that can affect the longevity of a plated piece?

The longevity of plating on jewellery will vary significantly depending on how it interacts with the environment. The amount of regular and repetitive contact with hard surfaces, sand and water will determine how quickly plating will remain and appear vibrant.

Everyone lives differently and so do their jewels.

How should I care for my plated pieces to prolong their life?

Plated pieces like to be worn. Leaving them in a box will see them oxidise quicker than active pieces. If they are looking a little dull gently rub them with a silver cloth. I use the Lucy Folk cleaning foam in the studio, it is great for removing dirt and oxidisation.

How long should I have my piece before I should consider getting it replated?

This is totally up to the wearer’s discretion. If you would like a freshen up, replating is a service we offer for a modest fee. I personally love seeing pieces that show their age and history. The least intervention the better. Some people will have it done every few years others will never have it replated. Totally the call of the individual and their taste.

What tips do you have for storing plated jewellery to prevent damage?

Avoid piling up jewellery in tangled messes in jewellery boxes. This will lead to scratching and broken chains. Have a dish next to the sink to place rings in while showering and washing hands. Keep larger pieces like necklaces in the original box when not being worn.
