A Master Jewellers Guide to Diamonds

When investing in timeless jewels, it's important that you carefully consider each element to ensure a meaningful connection.

Join us for an insightful conversation with our Master Jeweller Craig Spark as he guides us on what to consider when selecting a diamond piece, whether it's for personal adornment or to commemorate a special moment with a loved one.

When selecting diamond shapes or styles, what aspects should be considered?

When it comes to shapes there are absolutely no rules, this is very much a personal preference! I like combining different cuts that respond to light differently.

Highly faceted round cuts with a fiery mirrorball effect combined with say emerald cuts that throw the light in a structured liner style are a wonderful clash.

When selecting diamonds always go for quality over scale.

How do you feel regarding lab grown diamonds compared to natural? Why does Lucy Folk choose to use natural diamonds?

Natural is always best! We don’t deal in synthetic gems, our policy is to only use natural material. There is a lot of misinformation around industrially produced diamonds being more sustainable.

At the end of the day industrially produced diamonds use mined diamonds as seeds and intense amounts of power generated by fossil fuels. Ultimately people need to do their research and make their own decisions but I can’t see the benefit.

It really comes down to what you value and what you consider precious.

Are there any diamond styles that you can see gaining interest and popularity?

Our customers have been trending towards diamonds presented in a-symmetrical formations, bezal set in textured yellow gold.

Aside from diamonds, are there any popular stones used in engagement rings? Or any stones that you suggest to create a more unique style?

I want to make heirlooms for families so I tend to work mostly with diamonds and sapphires. These are the hardest gems and have the best chance of surviving a life time.

I also love rubies and they wear well also.

Why does Lucy Folk choose to use 18ct Gold with diamonds?

Both materials have magic qualities and an attraction that is difficult to define.

From a technical angle 18ct yellow gold is such a beautiful material to work with. It behaves beautifully on the bench when cutting, hammering, soldering and the colour is warm and rich!
Diamonds manipulate light and are mesmerising.

Ultimately 18ct yellow gold and diamonds are the perfect lovers, they complement each and are so sexy!

What is the best ways to care for and clean your diamond jewellery?

The wonderful character of gold and diamonds is that they are robust and clean easily. A soft jewellery cloth is the best place to start. If your diamonds are looking dull an ultrasonic bath is going to bring them back to their former glory.

Could you explain the different carats of diamonds and why they are important to consider when choosing a piece?

Carat of diamonds refers to the weight of a diamond. The carat weight of diamond you choose will come down to taste and budget.

Are there any symbolic meanings associated with any diamond shapes or styles?

Not in a general however when working on bespoke pieces I am always attempting to weave in a personalised narrative or message with shapes, numbers, colours and symbols.

Building pieces in this way elevates it from a fashion item to a talisman. This kind of jewellery becomes a part of a person’s identity and a source of confidence, strength and magic.
